Google has revised its guidance for using structured data for beta carousels, specifically designed for users within the European Economic Area (EEA). This update aligns with Google’s compliance efforts for the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The latest guidance elaborates on implementing this structured data for summary or category pages and for categories that use pagination.

Carousel (Beta) Rich Results for Aggregators and Suppliers

The Carousel (Beta) rich results are tailored for sites dealing with travel, local services, and shopping queries directed at EEA users. These rich results enable Google Search users to navigate horizontally through tiles that present relevant, context-specific information. Websites employing this new structured data can become eligible to be showcased in the carousel rich results.

The original announcement from February 2024 highlighted that initially, this display feature for shopping queries will be restricted to the Czech Republic, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Updated Documentation

The updated documentation features a concise paragraph added to the existing Structured Data Carousels (Beta) documentation, providing clearer guidance on its implementation.

The newly added guidance states:

“Mark up all items that are on the summary or category page. For paginated categories, add an ItemList to each subsequent page and include the entities that are listed on that page. For infinite scroll, focus on marking up the entities that are initially loaded in the viewport.”

The changelog notes the rationale behind this update:

“Marking up categories with many items for structured data carousels (beta)

What: Added guidance on how to mark up categories with many items to the structured data carousels (beta).

Why: We received a query through our feedback button on how to apply this markup to categories with numerous items, such as those with paginated content or infinite scrolling.”
